  • ORIGIN OF SPECIES
  • ORIGIN OF SPECIES
  • CHARLES R. DARWIN
  • THE VERDICT
  • GUILTY
  • The radio man brings in his microphone to broadcast the first public event ever broadcast on radio before. This represents progress sneaking its way into the small town of Hillsboro in spite of the guilty verdict. It is progress into the modern world that is governed by science and technology, rather than religion and superstitions.
  • Darwin’s book Origin of Species represents the importance of free thought. Cate’s inability to present this opposing theory of evolution flies in the face of the First Amendment, and seriously restricts the children's’ abilities to learn more about other beliefs so that they aren’t limited by their ignorance.
  • The verdict initiates the case for an appeal. This appeal will prompt the conversation of whether or not other theories can be censored in public schools in favor of only religious theory. Honest truth allows for both sides to be presented, and perhaps the sickly ideas will die off if they are truly harmful to society.
