  • Ancient Rome began on a peninsula in southern Europe that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded among seven hills along the Tiber River in 753 BCE. It continually expanded until at its height in 117 CE it covered much of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
  • Rome was founded along the banks of the Tiber River. The river provided fresh water for drinking, bathing, watering crops, as well as fishing.
  • Rome was located on the Mediterranean Sea which provided fishing, trading and traveling.

  • The Apennine Mountain Range along the peninsula of Italy, as well as the Alps in the North, provided a natural protective barrier for Rome against potential enemies.
  • The Mediterranean had warm summers and mild winters. Soil along hillsides was fertile for farming and livestock. Romans also mined for iron, copper, tin, lead, gold, and silver throughout their empire.
