- The birlings are getting ready for an engagement party between sheila and Gerald and the servant lets in an inspector, the inspector comes in the room and is holding a book in his hand, which is Eva Smiths' diary.
- the inspector comes in the room and introduces himself as inspector Goole, he tells them that a girl, Eva Smith, committed suicide by drinking disinfectant and he wants to ask them a few questions about it, Mr Birling tells Mrs birling to leave the room
- Mrs birling leaves and the inspector reveals that she used to work at Mr birlings factory and that Mr birling had sacked her after she influenced the factory to go on strike. Mr birling admits that he did what he had to do and that she was causing trouble
- The inspector then mentions that a girl was fired from her job at millwoods and sheila tells him that she was having a bad day and she thought that Eva Smith was making fun of her outfit, Sheila complained and got her sacked. Sheila feels remorseful as she thinks she played a part in her death. Mrs birling comes back in the room because she is curious as to what is going on
- The inspector then interrogates Gerald and makes him confess about an affair he had with Eva. He says how he provided a place for her to stay and how he met her at the palace bar, then he says that he left her. Sheila is grateful that Gerald was honest but returns the engagement ring back to him. The inspector asks Mrs birling about her charity and she tells him that she refused to help Eva smith because she thought she was lying and she used her name
- Mrs birling goes on a rant about her and she says that whoever got her pregnant should take responsibility for it, The rest of them all know where this is going and try to stop her from insulting the guy. Eric then admits that he met Eva at the palace bar and thought she was a sex worker he gave her money but she finds out that the money is stolen and she does not accept it anymore, Eva became pregnant with Erics' child and so he offered to marry her but she doesn't marry him.
