  • Bands were hired to try to raise the spirits of the soldiers in the camps whose lives were incredibly boring. They had to do intense physical exercise and were subject to drills most of the day. Many soldiers wore ragged clothes, no shoes, and were always hungry and cold. They missed their families greatly, and would get their hopes up when the mailman came only to usually be crushed becausethere were no letters for them.
  • I miss my family so much
  • In the south, most African Americans couldn't even become soldiers. Some blacks would be construction workers, and personal slaves would be used as orderlies and cooks. Even after they were allowed in combat in March 1865, they were not treated equally. Even soldiers in the north weren't equal. They were paid $3 less than white soldiers and experienced higher injury/death rates due to being targeted. They were often immediately killed in prisoner of war camps.
  • I'm being targeted!
  • Unfortunately, the only thing we can do is amputate your arm, we don't have the time for anything else.
  • Medical treatment was terrible. Many soldiers actually tried to avoid going to hospitals, and more soldiers died from disease than battle during the war due to the abysmal conditions in hospitals. Hospitals were understaffed and underprepared, and so surgeons would be forced to just amputate limbs. When proper surgery was able to be performed, it was often done with the soldier awake, as they had no anesthesia. This was so painful many soldiers would kill themselves so they wouldn't have to go through this. Diarrhea was one of the worst diseases. Somebody who had it for three months died two weeks after treatment after being given lead acetate, opium, and many other chemicals, which shows the true lack of good medical treatment.
  • Both armies preferred coffee, but ate pretty different things, Union soldiers were served beans, bacon, pickled beef, dried, compressed vegetables, a cake that made soup when crushed in boiling water, and hardtack(extremely hard biscuits). Confederate soldiers ate “sloosh,” which was cornmeal swirled in bacon grease, then wrapped around a rod and cooked over a campfire.
  • I'm getting pretty tired of sloosh.
  • In some prisons, the soldiers were not given shelter or clothing and had to burrow into the ground. Even where there were rooms, many had too many people, were infested with vermin, and were drafty. Soldiers would crawl out of their rooms, and fights would occur for spots around fires. Diseases were prevalent, with dysentery being one of the most dangerous diseases. At Rock Island in Illinois, 1800 Confederate soldiers died of smallpox. The sick were not helped, either, just left out in the fields to die. The camps smelled bad, and had a lack of sanitary practices. Money was scarce, so prisoners would use items, like rats, to trade and use for currency. In the worst prison, Andersonville Prison, 28.9% of people who went there died.
  • We're dying here and need medical treatment!
  • In a civil war battle, the attackers would march forward to the beat of a drum while the defenders would shoot at the attackers, usually from behind cover. The Union would yell "hurray!" and the Confederates would do their rebel yell. Once they met, gunfire and commotion would cause so much smoke commanders would have trouble seeing and giving orders, causing confusion. The fighting was gruesome, with men witnessing swords being shoved through heads. Flying bullets, exploding shells, and close contact revealed the true horrors of fighting. The battles were usually short, only lasting a day, but were very bloody.
  • HURRAY!!!
