  • The United States was facing problems between the North and South because of a tariff called the Tariff of Abominations. The North supported the tariff because it protected the factories and helped their economy. The South on the other hand was against it because they depended on trade with Europe and had to pay higher prices for goods.

  • South Carolina John C. Calhoun argued that states had the right to ignore federal laws they believed were harmful. He thought the state could nullify the tariff and didn't have to follow it. This caused tension because it challenged authority. People began to worry.

  • President Andrew Jackson opposed nullification and believed the Union must stay together. He warned South Carolina that they could not leave the union. This allowed the military to use force if needed. He wanted to show that federal laws must be obeyed and the country must stay united. So, we didn't go into a crisis Henry Clay stepped up and proposed a comprise. The promise lowered the tariff, and this helped calm tension. South Carolina agreed to stay in the union.
