  • The Purchase of the Louisiana Territory was a very important moment in US history because it allowed them to take over the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River, giving them a better center of trade with the rest of the world which helped in growing their economy and population. Though the French lost a lot of land in this treaty, they gained money which allowed them to pay off their debt from the war with the British and begin to remake their country.

  • The attack on Fort Goliad was significant for the Texan army because it made them believe they could win against the much larger and stronger Mexican forces, and allowed them time to increase their strength in numbers and make better battle strategies. The Mexican army was impacted by this loss because they lost many soldiers in the battle and lost a very important fort in Texas territory, which could have helped the Mexicans win the war.

  • American Indians and Westward Expansion - The Massacre at Wounded Knee Creek
  • The Cherokee, Heading to Oklahoma, 1838
  • For the US, the first shots being fired, signaling the beginning of a war, meant spending a lot of money and resources on war, but also meant the chance to gain more land to the west and continue Manifest Destiny. For the Mexicans, these first shots meant they would have to get ready for another war and expend precious money and resources to protect their land and people.

  • The Oregon Trail was significant for settlers because they were risking their lives and traveling far from their homes for a chance at a new and better life with priceless natural resources to create a potentially thriving economy. For the Indigenous people, this impacted their territory and farm lands because settlers were journeying through their territories and using their resources, depleting their supplies which were usable and making some of their farmland unfertile and affecting the food sources for their people.
  • White Settlers, Heading to Oregon, 1846
  • The Massacre at Wounded Knee creek was an important event for the Sioux because it made them realize that they had no chance of victory against the ruthless American army, and made them realize that they could not fight any longer. This was also a grand moment for the Americans because it meant the war with the Indigenous people was over and that they had control of the majority of the land from the pacific to the Atlantic in the central parts of North America.
