  • The Iroquois-speaking people went through a time of constant conflict amongst each other. The conflict was often warfare and they often fought and killed one another. They originated in the present-day New York State area in North America.

This council was known as the 5 Nations and consisted of 50 leaders whom were from each of the tribes.

  • Since the Aztec Empire was expanding, the growth of the population sparked an increase in trade and the development of markets. Every settlement had a market, these markets were always lively on their weekly market days. The latest market was known as the Tlatelolco Marketplace by the capital city which had a large variety of goods and was huge in size. The pochteca, professional merchants, were known as commoners but their wealth often surpassed those of higher status, which later enabled them to rise up in society.

  • In the public life of the Aztec Empire, human sacrifices played an important role. They believed that the sun or the deity Huitzilopochtli constantly battled the darkness and lost a great amount of energy from it. So, it required the life-giving force of human blood and by sacrificing humans they are nourishing the present gods. In doing so they would prevent disaster, these rituals soon went on to serve the purpose of impressing their allies, enemies, and conquered peoples.

  • The Inca Empire began as a small state that grew quite large by military conquest. In contrast to the Aztec's the Inca ruled their empire through bureaucracy. They had an emperor who was at the top and was considered divine and had governors in each province. In the central region, the conquered people were placed into hierarchical groups in which were directed by local officials. In the enormous empire of Inca it required great effort to establish effective administrative systems, they encountered resistance, cooperation of local peoples, and sometimes had to build brand new systems.

  • Subjected or conquered people weren't required to give up much to the state but they were required to do a labor service for the state, which is known as mita. An example is that some would work on state farms or "sun farms" which supported which supported religious institutions; others served the military, mined, and or herded. People with certain skills were put to work in manufacturing metal products, textiles, ceramics, and stonework. For performing their services they were given feats(large amounts of food and drink) by the state.
