  • Louisiana Purchase- Lewis and Clark Expedition (1803)
  • Hi, this is Lewis and Clark.
  • This new land in Louisiana is amazing!
  • Why are you here?
  • We came from the U.S. to explore our new land that we claimed from France!
  • Your land? Land is not property, how do you own it?
  • Texas Revolution- Battle of Gonzales (1835)
  • The town of Gonzales, October 2nd, 1835
  • COME AND TAKE IT!
  • No, but you can come and try.
  • We came from Mexico to take your cannon.
  • Let's retreat. Someone died.
  • Indian Removal- Trail of Tears (1838)
  • Keep moving! We need all the Cherokees out of this land!
  • Do you think the new reservation is nice?
  • I don't know if we'll make it there anyways because so many of us are dying.
  • From the perspective of the US the Lewis and Clark Expedition was great because it created good relations with the Native tribes in the new land, and they explored their newly claimed land. From the perspective of the Native Americans it was good and bad because they realized people would be moving into their land, and they made new friends in the U.S.
  • Mexican War- Texas Border Dispute (1846)
  • Ambush them!
  • The Mexicans are crossing the border!
  • From the perspective of Texas the Battle of Gonzales was good because it made the Texans realize that there was no going back, and that they will have to fight for their independence. For Mexico it was bad because Mexico did not want Texas to get separated.
  • Oregon Territory- The Oregon Trail (1846)
  • For the Cherokee tribe the Trail of Tears was a horrible time because many people in their tribe were killed. For the U.S. this was great because it started the removal of Natives and expansion into new territory.
  • Westward Expansion- Custer's Last Stand (1876)
  • The Sioux Tribe defeat the Americans at Little Big Horn in 1876
  • For the U.S. the Texas Border Dispute gave a great reason to declare war against Mexico. From Texas' perspective it was also great because the U.S. was going to fight for Texas.
  • Rio Grande, April 25, 1846
  • They ambushed us! We need to declare war!
  • Okay, President Polk.
  • From the Native Americans in the Oregon Country's perspective the Oregon Trail was horrible because tribes were forced to do things they didn't want and they realized that the US is fine with going back on their promises. From the U.S.' perspective it was great because many settlers were moving into the new territory which made it feel more like a powerhouse in the world.
  • This new land in Oregon is way better than our land in Virginia.
  • I hope I can find a new friend that settled here.
  • It was a tough journey, but we made it.
  • From the perspective of the Sioux tribe Custer's Last Stand was significant because the tribe would retreat even though they won the battle showing that they feared future comings of war. For the U.S. it was good even though they lost because this would be one of the last interactions with the Native tribes in their colonizations.
  • We may have lost, but we'll be back.
  • Oh no! General Custer died!
  • We know. That's why we're leaving Little Big Horn.
