Welcome to the talk show, today we will be talking about a new documentary called ' Evolution-but not as we know it' and Dr Janki will give us a sneak peek into it.
Evolution does not mean we evolved from apes. Evolution is a long, slow process that happens through natural selection.
What do you mean by natural selection?
Natural selection is the most important cause of evolutionary change. It means that individuals with favourable traits survive and reproduce.
Are elephants born without tusks a case of natural selection?
Yes! This is a perfect example of anatomical adaptation cause by poachers. Elephants use their tusks for defence, offence and getting food.
Their survival instinct against predators has overcome their need of the tusks resulting in nearly a 3rd of Mozambique's female elephant population to have no tusks , which is a shame.
Other types of adaptation are the behavioural adaptation-example being the solidary nature of cheetahs and physiological adaptation such as the venom made by snakes for protection and capturing prey.
