- The Duke Theseus is preparing for his wedding with his bride to-be Hippolyta when an old man named Egeus storms in and complains that he wants his daughter Hermia to marry a man named Demetrius but she wants to marry a man called Lysander. Theseus gives Hermia a choice: obey her father, become a nun or be executed.
- The Broken Heart
- Hermia and Lysander plan to run away into the forest and get married and only tell Hermia's best friend Helena. But Helena is in love with Demetrius (who loves Hermia) so tells him hoping to win his love. Demetrius immediately goes into the forest pursued by Helena.
- Love At First Sight
- Meanwhile, in another part of the forest, Oberon and Titania ( the rulers of the fairies) were arguing about who was in command. Titania stormed off but Oberon decided to teach Titania a lesson. He summoned his servant Puck who he told to find a magical flower that's juices, when put in someone's eyes, would make them fall in love with the next thing they saw when they awoke.
- Mistaken Identity
- Just after Puck left, Oberon saw Demetrius running away from Helena. Demetrius was trying to find Hermia and Lysander but all Helena wanted was to be loved by Demetrius. When Puck arrived, Oberon gave Puck a petal and told him to find a young Athenian lady who was chasing a young man and put the juice in his eyes. Meanwhile Oberon would put some in Titania's eyes.
- Near to where Titania was sleeping, a band of performers, also known as the Mechanicals, were practicing their play for the Duke's wedding. Their leader, an enthusiastic man named Nick Bottom, was performing the lead part. As he exited to wait for his cue, Puck had a sneaky idea. He gave Bottom an ass' head. The Mechanicals ran but Titania awoke and fell in love with Bottom.
- As Puck wandered by he happened to see Lysander and Hermia and, mistaking them for Helena and Demetrius, put the love juice in Lysander's eyes. As soon as Puck left Helena came crying into the clearing and tripped on Lysander and woke him up. As soon as their eyes met Lysander sat bolt upright and shouted "I love you Helena!" He then ran after her as she ran too.
