- This story takes place in the coal mining district of Panem, district 12. Katniss is the main character with a poor family. During the reaping, where kids from each district are chosen to partake in the hunger games, Katniss's sister Prim is chosen, so Katniss takes her place with the boy tribute being Peeta Mellark.

- Katniss and Peeta are being transferred to the Capitol to participate in the hunger games. They are mentored by Haymitch, a former winner, who guides them on how to survive. During training Katniss catches the eyes of the Capitol's citizens and gains supporters.

- During the interviews, Peeta reveals his love for Katniss which throws everyone off guard including Katniss as she thinks this is just a strategy for the game to win over everybody which makes her feeling unsure and she is unsure if what she feels for Peeta is genuine.

- As the games start Peeta and Katniss form alliances, but Peeta's alliance wants to kill Katniss. Katniss shows her resourcefulness earning the respect of sponsors who gift her things that she needs.

- Katniss faces challenges when a wall of fire descends over her. After making it away from the fire she decides she wants to eliminate some tributes, so she drops a nest of tracker jackers over the careers getting stung by a few herself.

- At the sudden revelation that both tributes can now win the games, Katniss risks her very own life to find and aid critically wounded Peeta while still portraying the lovers image.

- Peeta and Katniss return to the Capitol as they are crowned the victors of the hunger games. Katniss realizes that her and Peeta's fake romance has not only fooled the audience but herself too and she starts to question her feelings for Peeta.

- Before Katniss leaves the Capitol, the president (President Snow) visits her letting her know that defying the Capitol's rules has consequences. Katniss now knows that her actions have caused rebellion throughout all districts making her a symbol of hope.

- Peeta and Katniss return to District 12 as victors' hand in hand even though feelings are being lost as they take the stage. Katniss fears what the Capitol might do to her District because of her rebellious actions. They both know this is not the end.
