Mr. Jenrette, is threatening Mr. Copeland because he won't let his son off easy for committing rape against a girl. He wants to dig up all of Mr. Copeland secrets, which he has plenty.

"A few days ago, a couple of Manhattan homicide detectives showed me an unidentified male victim. I think the man-a man said was in his mid to late thirties-was Gil Perez" (Coben 206).
"Our Gil? How the hell is that possible?" (Coben 206).
Mr. Copeland (Paul) and Ms. Gold (Lucy) catch up 15 years later after the incident. They are talking about the weird coincidences and how people are digging up their past. It's awkward but they manage to overcome and communicate to each other

"Maybe it was something in Ira's stance or the way he pulled out the gun or whatever made me realize that there was no indeed talking to him, that he was going to fire and I was going to die" (Coben 347).
Ira took Paul out to talk about the truth, but the truth was Ira killed them and was going to kill Paul next and bury the truth forever.
