- Today class, we will be doing a lab on resonance. Resonance is a very important part of the study of vibrations and sound.

- The purpose of doing this lab will be to dive deeper into the study of sounds and vibrations

- We think during this lab, when the tuning fork is hit over the hole of the tube we will be able to observe and record different tones at different resonant lengths. Perhaps one tone while in the water and a higher tone while out.

- Lets put it to the test. Time to go to the lab.

- For this lab we will need a tuning fork, water, graduated cylinder, tube, and a ruler.

- First thing they did was filled the graduated cylinder with water.

- Next, they placed the tube in the cylinder as shown on the board. (Pretend the test tube is a paper tube with 2 openings)

- Thirdly, they took the tuning fork and struck it over the opening.

- After sounding the tuning fork, they held it close to, but not touching, the tube. At the same time, they slowly moved the inner tube from the water until a loud sound was heard.

- The fifth thing they did was took their ruler and measured the length of the air column, and recorded the first resonant length. (L1)

- They repeated this process until they found the second resonant length. (L2)

- Complete this and move on to finishing your analysis and conclusion.

- Resonance is the occurrence of a vibrating object causing another object to vibrate at a higher amplitude. It happens when the frequency of the periodic force is equal to the natural frequency of the object
- We will also be learning and analyzing the relationship between resonance and the aspects of the lab including the length of the tube, frequency and speed of the sound. The information we achieve throughout this lab will help you better understand the study of resonance.
