Gifted Underachievement

Remember, it is not a one size fits all.
I have some gifted students in my classes that are not performing. I am not sure if they just don't care or if there are other underlying issues.
Well, there are several factors to consider. Some of the issues are related to school, while others have to do with the student's family.
Leslie is very gifted and talented. However, she is anxious most of the times, and her parents expect her to always excel. Her attempts at being perfect and meeting her parent's expectations, shuts her down.
Some students, such as Shelly, experience discrimination due to gender. There is also the factor that she is from a culturally diverse background.
Then, there is Thomas. He has these unique ideas. But his teachers and peers view him as silly. His teacher expects conformity, and dismisses him.
Underachievers perform well on test that measure ability, but not in the classroom. We also have selective achievers whose abilities are in specific areas that satisfy their interests and personal goals.
You also have to consider under achievement and selective achievement.
