Good Question Oliver, when solids heat up the particles will take in more energy pushing on each other until they form a Liquid . Which is what we are going to talk about tomorrow.
The Characteristics of solids are particles that are packed closer together, the particles barely move, and they have a definite volume and shape. The energy is solids are low since they barely move.
So an example of a solid is my desk!

Liquid has loosely arranged particles, there are bigger spaces between the particles. The liquid particles are constantly moving. Liquids also have no definite volume which is why it takes the shape of the container it is in. When liquid is heated, the particles will take in more energy pushing on each other until they form gas.
So when you boil water the steam that is rising is the liquid turning into gas!

In gasses the particles are floating freely, they have big spaces in between them. The particles are in constant motion. Gas has no definite volume or shape. Air can be compressed, and fill a container. The energy is very high in gas since the particles are in constant motion. These particles have the most energy from heat that they can take in.
My balloon is compressed with gas!
