- The people involved: the person receiving communion, the priest and the community (depends) - There are 3 rites of reconciliation, in rite 1 you have to organise a separate time with the priest to confess, in rite 2 you will individually confess but the community will be present and in rite 3 the Priest gives a general absolution of sins after the community have reflected privately; this is in special circumstances such as war.
- My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failingto do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more,and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. (Rite of Penance, no. 45)
- Confession: After you greet each other and have made the sign of the cross you must confess your sins to the priest. The priest will patiently listen until you have finished confessing.
- Penance: After you have confessed the Priest will propose an act of penance. It may be prayer, a work of mercy, or an act of charity. The priest may counsel you on how you can live a better life as a Catholic. 
- Act of Contrition: After you have listened to the priest's proposal of penance, pray an Act of Contrition. This is to show sorrow for the sin you have made and your resolve to not sin again. 
- Absolution: The priest will then raise his hands and pronounce the words of Absolution, the response is 'Amen.'
- Dismissal: The priest will conclude the sacrament, often saying, “Go in peace.”
