- At around 3 o'clock in the morning, Mr. Enfield was making his way home when he spotted a little girl running down a cross street and another man heading eastward.

- Suddenly, the man and the girl crashed into each other. However, instead of helping her up, the man trampled her as she screamed in shock and pain. People were angered as they watch the man walk away as if nothing happened.
- Hey what are you doing you monster! Get off of her!

- Dr. Enfield then takes the man back by the collar, and the mob of people, including the little girl's family and a doctor, threatened to ruin his reputation if he doesn't compensate the girl's family.
- We could and would make a scandle of out this. We will ruin your reputation!
- If you choose to make capital out of this accident, I am naturally helpless. No gentleman but wishes to avoid a scene. Name your figure.
- We demand a 100 pounds compensation for the family!

- The man (Hyde) then goes into the building and retrieves a check for 100 pounds. The check, however, had Dr. Jekyll's signature, and Mr. Enfield was suspicious that it was a forged. Because of this, Mr. Enfield, the girl's father, the doctor, and the man (Hyde) decided to go cash the check in order to ensure its validity the next day.
- I will stay with you till the banks open and cash the cheque myself.
- This check signature looks forged!

- Upon cashing in the check, Enfield realized that the check was genuine. Even so, he believes that Dr. Jekyll was blackmailed and forced to give the man (Hyde) the check.
- Dr. Jekyll must have been blackmailed.
