- James K. Polk asks Congress to declare war on Mexico in a dispute over Texas. This request was made amidst border conflicts, failed diplomatic negotiations, and his goal to fulfill Manifest Destiny.

- In 1847, in the Battle of Buena Vista, Zachary Taylor led American forces to a victory against Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The battle was fought near Monterrey in Northern Mexico and it was the bloodiest fight of the war.
- In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed by Nicholas Trist (State Department's chief clerk) and three Mexican representatives. It ended the Mexican American War and in the treaty, Mexico gave up 55 percent of its territory to the US. This included present day NM, NE, CA, UT, and parts of WY, KS, OK.
