We're cornered!
On July 3, 1775, George Washington was appointed general of the Continental Army. This was very important because without Washington's expert planning and battle strategies, the colonies would have likely lost this seemingly impossible war.
During late June 1776 New York/Long Island was invaded by a British force of 40,000 that doubled the 20,000 Patriots. The Colonies lost many soldiers, and supplies. The New England colonies were then cut off from the middle colonies.

Fort Ticonderoga
Saratoga
On October 17, 1717, General Benedict Arnold came up with a plan to raid a British Fort, Fort Ticonderoga. which was held by General Burgoyne. On his way to the fort he came across a local militia called the Green Mountain Boys who he later formed an allience with for his mission. Raiding Fort Ticonderoga was easy because they did it at night which caught General Burgoyne’s army off guard. This pushed back General Burgoyne’s army to Saratoga where they were surrounded and captured by other continental forces.

After the battle of Saratoga, other counties understood that the colonies might win the war. With help from Benjamin Franklin, the French agreed to help the colonies fight by sending money, supplies, and soldiers.
During 1781, the armies of George Washington, Lafayette, and Rochambeau worked together to corner General Clinton's army in Yorktown with French ships to prevent escape or help.
