The four prisoners chipped at the walls for months until they made a hole big enough to crawl through. They were able to create a secret workshop.
The prisoners then took up a hobby of painting, so it wouldn't be suspicious when they ordered art supplies to make fake heads and walls to cover up the holes in their cells.
On the night of the escape, the prisoners tucked their hand dummy heads under their blankets. It looked real.
