טקסט Storyboard

  • שקופית: 1
  • Right before class started
  • I've never taken a class about comics and cancer, but I'm excited to learn about it!
  • שקופית: 2
  • In the beginning of the semester
  • Mhmm... I don't know much about comics do I?
  • שקופית: 3
  • I'm determined to read more and find out what exactly makes comics so special and how they connect to cancer
  • I'll start with The Emperor of All Maladies and I Kill Giants
  • שקופית: 4
  • Wow the EoAM is very interesting! The Prologue introduced the reader to the medical doctor and how he sees the life sucked out of patients with cancer
  • I can't imagine how tough this is for both patients and the doctors treating them
  • EoAM
  • שקופית: 5
  • Wait, wait! So where do comics come in? Why is it important?
  • שקופית: 6
  • A little after the first few weeks
  • According to the Graphic Medicine Manifesto, graphic medicine allows for more empathy, dialogue, and gives us new perspectives
  • I mean it is also way easier to read for anyone. I also think they're way more entertaining
  • שקופית: 7
  • That title sounds interesting and is probably suggesting an inner battle
  • Now that that makes sense let me read I Kill Giants...
  • I Kill Giants
  • שקופית: 8
  • In this coming of age story we see how Barbara deals with grief and loss as her mom is battling with a terminal illness. She uses her imagination to deal with this
  • So my inference about her inner battle was right, yay!
  • I Kill Giants
  • שקופית: 9
  • The more I think about it, the more all of these readings click... "EoAM" gives me the history of cancer and the developments while "GMM" and the comics give me an example of how this can be made into a story to follow along
  • When things are too involved in science we tend to lose touch that it's a real person living it all, which is where comics come in!
  • שקופית: 10
  • Later on...
  • Time for the next book... "Cancer Vixen"
  • The title is immediately grabbing my attention. Let's see..
  • שקופית: 11
  • Now that I'm comfy, let's read
  • שקופית: 12
  • Wow, knowing that this was written and lived by the author makes it very deep
  • This is a new perspective of someone who was uninsured so not only is her diagnosis stressful, but also the system
  • Yes, cancer changed her in ways never thought of before. Her appearance was something uncontrollable, but yet after a hard battle, she found the way to stay strong and hopeful
  • שקופית: 13
  • Comic/graphic novels allow the author to express how they were feeling through their own battle or someone else's.
  • You know, "GMM" has got be thinking about when we were younger and drew and colored all the time. I didn't matter if you were good at it, you just expressed yourself.
  • Nearing the end
  • שקופית: 14
  • Oh no, there's so many great comics to choose from and many that I haven't mentioned, but I think I know which ones to choose.
  • For my comic project I will look into "Cancer Vixen" and "Mom's Cancer" because they are protagonizing women
  • שקופית: 15
  • The connections that I've made while doing this project shows how much we really learn and experience while reading. Anything from a little smile to the background let's us know more about the characters and their journey. The use of color and lack of transfer into something a paper could never do!
  • שקופית: 16
  • It's amazing what comics stand for and how accessible they can be for anyone, no matter their age. Such a scientific topic like cancer, can be seen through an emotional lens. This makes us so much more empathetic
  • To know that I didn't know much about comics and even less about how the connected to cancer. Now, I've learnt a ton!
  • שקופית: 17
  • As a future healthcare professional, I will use art like comics and remember how useful it can be for anyone but especially for those going through an illness like cancer
  • It's sad that this class is coming to an end, but I will never forget what I learned.
  • The end
  • שקופית: 18
  • Thank you Professor Lewis and thank you comics!
