Troy is letting Rose know that he had an affair with another woman. In Fences it states, "I'm trying to find a way to tell you... I'm gonna be a daddy. I'm gonna be somebody's daddy". (Wilson 63) This shows the lack of respect for his wife. He walked out of his relationship to have another child with another woman.

Troy is letting Bono the love he has for his wife, Rose. The text states, "Hell, nigger, I know she a good woman. I been married to her for eighteen years". (Wilson 60) Even after the affair Troy does knows the woman he married and his love for her.

Rose saw every version of Troy in Cory, even though he couldn't recognize it within himself. As a mother she was able to witness things her son couldn't.
Cory believed that wherever he went his father followed. The text states, "Papa was like a shadow that followed you everywhere". (Wilson 89) Cory not realizing that in many ways, he was simply becoming a version of Troy.
