- many Americans demanded war against France. John Adams chose a different path by strengthening the navy while avoiding a full war. This conflict became known as the Quasi-War, a series of naval battles fought at sea.

- After tensions with France increased, many Federalists feared that immigrants might support America’s enemies. Congress passed the Alien Acts to make it harder for immigrants to become citizens and to allow the president to deport foreigners considered dangerous. John Adams signed these laws believing they would protect national security.

- By 1800, many Americans were unhappy with John Adams’s presidency. His decisions, especially the Alien and Sedition Acts, turned voters against him. Thomas Jefferson won the election, marking the first peacefull transfer of power between political parties.
