  • So, Dan, I heard you know a lil bit about Jacksonian Democracy??
  • Sure!!
  • Yeah Diane, I know a little something, Want me to share it with you?
  • It started in 1829 when Andrew Jackson won the presidential election.
  • He expanded suffrage for the common man.
  • Suffrage means to Vote.
  • What is suffrage
  • Jackson expanded voting rights. But only for white men, not for women, blacks or Native Americans.
  • Oh WOW!!
  • Then there was the Spoils System.
  • Was that for spoiled brats?
  • No. That was when the party in power would reward their supporters with jobs in the White House
  • (chuckles) Yeah!
  • Oh like the saying, To the victor go the spoils
  • President Jackson also wanted a very strong government.
  • Yes, but with the 3 branches of government, he wanted to expand the power of then executive branch.
  • I thought the president was already powerful?
  • Didn't he get into a war with the banks?
  • Yes, and with his newly established power, he vetoed the Supreme Court's decision to continue the Second National Bank's charter. and ultimately destroyed them.
  • Lastly, for this afternoon Diane... Jackson wanted the white man to be able to settle lands in the west.
  • Okay, that sounds good.
  • No, because that led to the Trail of Tears / Indian Removal Act of 1930, that allowed the white men to take the Native American Indians land and forced them to relocate hundreds of miles away.
  • Yes, this was devastating to the Indian Tribes. Thousands and thousands of them got sick, starved and even died.
  • That's terrible!
  • Well Diane, that's it for this afternoon. I hope you learned a lil bit about the Jacksonian Democracy
  • You're welcome!
  • I certainly did. And I also notice that in politics, as much as things change--many things stay the same. Thanks Dan!!
