- EXPOSITION: Katniss Everdeen is a sixteen year old girl that lives in District 12 in a country called Panem. Her father passed in a coal mine accident when she was young and currently lives with her mother and sister, Prim.

- The selection for the Hunger Games, the Reaping, where a male and female from each of the 12 districts are chosen to fight to the death in an arena organized by the Capitol, soon begins.

- RISING ACTION: At the Reaping, Prim's name is drawn as a participant in the games, which prompts Katniss to volunteer to take her place, a move that hasn't been done in years in their district. Peeta Mellark, the male chosen from District 12, and Katniss are sent to the Capitol to train for the Games. During this time, they are introduced to all of Panem along with the other twenty-two contestants via broadcasting.

- CLIMAX: When the Hunger Games came down to its two final victors, Katniss and Peeta, it was stated earlier that two contestants from the same district could win. The Capitol had shifted their stance once more, meaning only one could survive. When it was announced to the pair, they threatened to eat poisonous berries rather than kill each other. The rebellious actions were stopped, and both were quickly declared victors.
