They had always had great success until their father, Harold gambled their money away and the stock market crashed
Afterwards, the dust bowl came and wiped out their crops, leaving them with nothing.
He couldn't withdraw any of the money he had from the banks, since all of them had closed.

The farming equipment was bought on an installment plan during WW1, and without any profit they were unable to pay it back. They went into debt and lost their home.
