Good afternoon, President Cleveland. I asked you to come in because I was wondering if I could seek your counsel on the issue of annexing Hawaii.
Thank you for inviting me over, President McKinley. It feels good to be back here and I'd be happy to give you my two cents.
The idea of annexing Hawaii has grown more popular since you left office. To be honest, I like the idea because of the advantages of having Hawaii as a territory.
I would be all for annexation only if a majority of Hawaiians supported it. However, it seems as though only white American sugar producers support the idea.
Do you know how violent and dangerous those producers are?! The Queen gave up her power willingly when confronted by them. Her decision stopped a war from happening.
After learning about everything that took place, I don't believe the Queen's surrender is valid. I think Hawaii should still be with her and her people unless they were to acquiesce under more peaceful circumstances.
Well, I'm sorry, Mr. President, but we are too far past that point. I think annexation is our only option but think of the more diverse economy and culture our country will have.
Yes, I fear so too. Those advantages are relieving to ponder about when it comes to annexation. I just don't want civil liberties nor bodies to be trampled in the process.
I say that we annex Hawaii in the most peaceful manner possible before more trouble brews regardless of what the Hawaiians think.
That is not the conclusion I would come to if I were in your position. But this is your time, so your decision is simply your decision.
Well, Congress is pushing for annexation now and I don't plan on stopping it. Even though we couldn't come to an agreement, I appreciate and thank you for your opinion, Mr. President.
Of course, Mr. President. I just hope that whatever happens next is in the best interest of this country. I wish you the best of luck on this issue and more.
