What do you need help with?
I want to know the area of the floor to know what carpet I should use to cover the entire floor. But I want the carpet to have a 3 inch on all sides from the wall.
After measuring, one side of the room is 4 ft times longer then the other one.

To calculate the area of the room we need to times the length and width of the room. In this case, it is 4x and x. We use x because we don't know the other side of the room.
So, 4x * x = 4x^2 ft.
Next we need to find what the area of the carpet should be, right? So we should do 4x + 3 for the longer side and x + 3 for the shorter side
You are slightly wrong. The carpet should be smaller than the area of the room, not bigger. Therefore, we should subtract three from both sides.
That would give us 4x -3 and x -3

(4x -3)(x -3) = 4x^2 -15x + 9 ft, which is the area of what the carpet should be.
But what if the x equaled 5?
Then we replace x with 5 in both equations. This'll now give us 4(5)^2 area of the room, and 4(5)^2 - 15(5) + 9 for the area of the carpet
The area of the room is 100 ft then.
Yes. And the area of the carpet should be 35 ft.
