- Getúlio Vargas, one of Brazil’s most influential political leaders, died by suicide on August 24, 1954, during a moment of intense political crisis. After years of rising pressure from political opponents, military leaders, and the media—who accused him of corruption and authoritarian tendencies—Vargas found himself cornered and unable to maintain control of the government. Rather than resign, he chose to take his own life inside the Catete Palace, leaving behind a powerful letter known as the Carta Testamento. In it, he framed his death as an act of sacrifice meant to defend the Brazilian people and preserve his legacy. His suicide sent shockwaves through the nation, sparking massive public demonstrations, shifting political alliances, and marking one of the most dramatic turning points in Brazil’s modern history.
