Walter arrives at the concentration camp after being taken from his home by he Nazis and is immediately forced into labor that could eventually end up ending his life.

"You know what they’ll do to me if this is a trick. Why help a Jew escape? You could be shot for speaking to me about this" (140) .
“You think I don’t know the risk I’m taking? I’ve seen enough death to want out myself. Maybe I’ve had enough of this place. Maybe I just want to remember I’m still human” (141).
In the shadows of Auschwitz, Walter meets a man who might be his only chance to escape — but trusting him could mean death.

Under the cover of darkness, Walter slips past the barbed wire and into the freezing night. Freedom is just beyond the fence, but so is death if he’s caught.
