- I was driving home from the grocery store. Dang the prices were high! Inflation is just getting worse and worse. By the way, inflation is the general increase in the price of goods and the decrease in value of money.

- Yes. I'm just curious why I'm in a hospital bed right now.

- I wouldn't mind a little bit of deflation now though.
- Well, if the economy started to deflate, you wouldn't know if you would be laid off from your job.
- Deflation is the overall decrease in prices in an economy.

- You know, I've always wondered. How do we calculate the inflation rate.
- I'm surprised that your biggest concern right now honey is about the economy. Before I answer, do you need me to get anything?

- Who's Solom... nevermind. So the inflation rate is calculate using the Consumer Price Index (CPI)

- That's interesting. So basically: It’s important for prices to remain relatively stable because it allows consumers of goods to get the most value for their money without industries reducing production and laying off. This means inflation can be a good thing, because a slight increase in the price of goods and capital gives an incentive for people to invest. Hyperinflation, however, will cause the prices of goods and services to rise too fast and as a result lead to lowering the standard of living. Deflation will do similar things because industries will have to slow down leading to a loss of jobs.

- The CPI is The measure of the increase in the market basket. The market basket is a list of common goods that represents most civilians' spending habits. The government chooses what goods go into the market basket. The percent change in the price of the market basket over time is calculated and CPI is given.
