- Monsieur Valmonde finds a beautiful baby crying under a big stone pillar in the gateway of Valmonde. He takes the baby, which kept crying "dada", and decides to raise her after consulting his wife, Madame Valmonde. They named her "Desiree", which means "desired".
- Climax
- Look at me! I am whiter than you, my eyes are gray, and my hair is brown!
- Despite loving her deeply, Madame Valmonde did not know where Desiree came from. Since her husband found Desiree on the ground, they had no idea who her family was or anything about her background.
- Falling Action
- Desiree and Armand, son of one of the highest families within Louisiana's nobility, fall in love with each other after Desiree becomes a grown woman. They had known each other since a very young age, however, it took him years to fall for her. After they got married and had a baby, he was extremely content and well-humored.
- Resolution

- As Desiree's baby grows, it changes worryingly. Its skin gets darker as time passes, and people start talking about how the heir of the entitled Aubigny family is of dark skin. As they were both confused as to why the baby was black, they started arguing with each other about whose fault it was. Since Desiree's origins were unknown, Armand assumed she was the one to blame, and got extremely mad at her for ruining his name.
- After they fought, Desiree mails Madame Valmonde explaining the situation and she tells Desiree to return home. As Armand does not protest her departure, Desiree leaves with the baby, walking into the swamp.
- In the backyard of his castle in L'Abri, Armand sat by a bonfire. His servants were using old papers as fuel for the fire, and among these were some letters. As he went through the letters, Armand found one his mother sent to his father. It said, "Our dear Armand will never know that his mother, who adores him, belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery.”
