  • Charles Sumner was born on January 6th, 1811 at Boston, Massachusetts. He would grow up and graduate from Harvard Law School in 1833, and later become a U.S senate in 1852.

  • As a state Senate he fought for Abolition, such as speaking against proposals such as the Missouri compromise, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. After the civil war, Sumner believed that the South should guarantee voting rights to African Americans before letting them back into the Union.

  • When Ulysses S. Grant president, Sumner clashed with him as chairman of the foreign relations committee. Grant planned to annex the Dominican Republic, for a place where free African Americans could go, and a great market for American goods. Though Sumner did not agree with this plan, he believed that African Americans should be protected in the South, and that annexing the Dominican Republic was a large nation bullying a smaller one. Sumners argument won the senates vote. Though his victory caused him to loose his position as chairman by Grant. Though he would continue to serve in the Senate until his death in Washington March, 11, 1874.
