  • After many bloody conflicts, Congress has decided on the Indian Peace Commission to replace the former policy and move you Plains Indians into two reservations. Sounds great, right?
  • It only took you 16 years and this plan mainly benefits the Americans secure railraod routes and facilitate westward Anglo-expansion.

  • Between the 1850s to 1890s, the Indian Wars erupted as the U.S. Army pushed westward onto Native American land. Native Americans resisted removal after repeated treaty violations and legal manipulation. Leaders like Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull united the Plains tribes and defeated George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Unfortunately, U.S. military retaliation followed, and in 1877, Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce were forced to surrender. The Chiricahua Apaches had been the last to surrender, becoming the last group to maintain organized Native resistance by the 1880s.

  • The Dawes Act of 1887 aimed to assimilate Native Americans by breaking up tribal land into individual farm plots. Native Americans were encouraged to become farmers and abandon their traditional culture. Much tribal land was lost to white settlers, further damaging Native communities.
