Esperanza is thinking that it should be fun eating in the cafeteria
We didn't always live on Mango Street.
My home isn't far but it's not close either, and somehow I got it in my head one day to ask my mother to make me a sandwich and write a not to the principal so I could eat in the canteen too.
ha, ha, ha, ha
The house on Mango Street is ours, and we don't have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and..... But even so, it's not the house we'd thought we'd get. The house on Mango street is not the way they told it. I knew then that I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to.

This illustrates an internal conflict for Esperanza. After visiting the coveted canteen, Esperanza then realized it wasn't all that she thought it would be. Not only did the Nun made her feel unwelcomed, the children looked at her and laughed.
This illustrates an internal conflict for Esperanza. The house that Esperanza's parents promised her was not the house they bought when they moved to Mango Street. Esperanza was never happy with where she lived, especially when she encountered the nun in her neighborhood. The nun spoke to her in a way that made her feel embarrassed of where she lived. It was at that moment she decided that she must get a home of her own.
