Stella after the news that a colored family might move into the neighborhood goes into the pool to think as Stella says to herself, " Before Blake, she'd never felt comfortable. She didn't realize this until after she'd met him, marveling as he'd order an entire steak for himself" (Bennett 173). Stella often sits in the pool alone after sending her daughter off to school with a gin by her side. She reminisces on how miserable her life was until she met Blake.

Stella was often sexually harassed by Mr. Dupont in the pantry, as Stella painfully remembers, "Three times he'd touch her and himself too... She always wanted to believe that there was something special about her but she knew that Mr. Dupont only pickedher because he sensed her weakness. She was the twin that wouldn't tell" (Bennett 174) Stella was seen as the twin that would never tell because of her personality, seen as a quiet and not an outspoken person and would stay to herself.
