- The Process of Photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar. Plants are making their own food through photosynthesis!
- Photons of light energy from the sun hit the chloroplasts of a plant cell.
- Light Dependent Reaction
- A chemical inside the chloroplasts called chlorophyll absorbs the photons of energy.
- Oxygen
- Water molecules that are absorbed from the roots and transferred into the leaves are split by the photons. Hydrogen stays in the chloroplasts while Oxygen exits the plant through the air.
- ATP and NADPH are created in this reaction
- Hydrogen
- Carbon Dioxide enters the plant through tiny pores called stomata.
- CarbonDioxide
- Light Independent Reaction
- The light Independent reaction uses the energy produced during light depending on the reaction to transform carbon dioxide into glucose
- Hydrogen
- Oxygen
- Carbon Dioxide combines with Hydrogen using the ATP and NADPH to create Glucose. Oxygen is also exiting the plant.
- Glucose
- Sunlight + Water + Carbon Dioxide = Glucose + Oxygen
