  • Who was involved?
  • The current president at the time Thomas Jefferson decided to send the future president James Monroe to paris in order to devise a deal to buy New Orleans from them. He was then surprised to learn that they wanted to make the deal that we know call the louisiana purchase.

  • Why was it purchased?
  • The Louisiana purchase was important because it gave theU.S. not only an extremely large amount of land but also the Mississippi River but also the port of New Orleans. This was important because it was a port for the U.S. ships to go on a trade route and was what the U.S. was originally looking to buy before the French proposed the Louisiana purchase.

  • Louisiana Purchase
  • It was purchased unexpectedly, the French gave decided to sell this land in order to pay for the expenses of the war. The deal approximately costed around 15 million dollars at around 3 cent per square acre. The deal ended with America getting 827,000 miles west of the Mississippi River.

  • Lewis and Clark
  • Lewis and Clark were friends of Jefferson's. They were the ones who explored the territory that was purchased from the Louisiana purchase from the years May 1804 to September 1806. Throughout their expedition they discovered many plant and animals, along with some Native American tribes. There were famous for their discoveries and their couragous jouney.

  • The territory was originally owned by France in the year 1689, but later in the year 1762 it was fought for and taken over by Spain. Then again in the year 1800 under new influence, a man named Napoleon the French regained the territory. Later France decided to sell the land to America in order to cover the cost of a recent war.

  • Results of the Expedition
  • Results of the expedition, the U.S. gained an extremely large quantity of land. This opened up a lot of fertile land and open areas for fur trappers, merchants, farmers and more. It also opened up many trade ports for the U.S. to be able to trade with other countries.
