- Paul and Kat prevent a recruit from going outside during a bombardment due to claustrophobia which is one of the conditions of PTSD which soldiers usually have during/after the war. (P 110)
- This was the group's first bombardment which made them realize the true risks of war.(P13)
- I need more bullets
- The group beated up a officer named Himmelstoss for making fun of Tjaden wetting the bed. This shows that the group dosen't deal with insults well as war can change ones personality and handling of situations.(P 49)
- The platoon was bombarded with artillery causing destruction and injuring a nearby horse. Some said to kill the horse but Kat refused as he used to be a farmer. Kat proves, that he still stayed true to his beliefs even in times in war. (P 63)
- After the bombardment, many soldiers were ether injured or dead and the group began to ponder as most of the soldiers were only young recruits. Even if they didn't recognize or know any of them, they still treated them with respect. (P 73)
- Paul was in a pothole when a French Soldier showed up and he shot him. Paul tried to subdue the wound, but eventually, the soldier died due to blood loss. He then promised to write to the soldier's wife and become a printer, since the soldier used to be a printer. This is the first time Paul felt sentiment for an enemy soldier. As the soldier's pocket book made him realize he killed a husband and a father. (P 223-225)
- During an artillery strike, Kat was hit by shrapnel and was bleeding out fast. Paul tries to get him to paramedics but unfortunately Kat dies as a small piece of shrapnel was lodged into his head. Kat and Paul were like brothers so losing Kat was a heavy loss on Paul's mind. So he tries to figure out what to do. Showing that in war, death is inevitable. (P 291)
- Paul was then sent back home for 3 weeks and when he gets there he feels like everything doesn't feel natural. As long periods in the trenches made it seem like home. He was also startled by a tram car as if it were a bomb falling. This is another condition of PTSD. (P166)
- When Paul was assigned to watch over Russian prisoners, he realized they were just like him, a soldier dragged into a war ordered to kill each other even though both sides know they didn't want to. So he gave them some of his cigarettes as a offering showing that he isn't totally ruthless. (P 194)
- When the group first enter the war effort, they courageously fought for their country with no reason. But as they continued they saw the real side of the war. With death and misery all around that they were never told by their higher ups in the first place. So, one by one the group of seven turned to a group of one as they died either by the war or disease. That one person, is Paul, as he lived to share his story through these hellish times in the "Great War".

- As a reader, I have my fair chance of reading action novels and non-fictions. So for All Quiet On The Western Front, I say it is a pretty good action novel as most were intense artillery scenes. Especially for non-fiction as it nails the atmosphere of WWI with the experience of the trenches and no-mans land. This book expands my interest for war novels as the main character goes through so much that eventually changes him in intense ways one couldn't imagine, especially during the scene with the French soldier. So I say I recommend this book if you want an war novel book that really gets into the depths of the "Great War".
