Morning Doctor. How does my heart work? Can you make me feel better?
Good morning Johnny. We will be taking you into surgery to fix your heart today! Do you have any questions?
Here lets have a look at this pamphlet together and I'll explain everything!
Wow okay what does the left side do?
Your heart is made up of the heart, blood and blood vessels . The heart is the size of your fist. It has two sides the left also known as the pulmonary circulation and right side known as the systemic circulation. The right side of the heart has blood flowing from the vena cava which is returning blood from the body, into the right atrium. When the atria muscle contracts it forces the blood through to the right ventricle. The valves between the atrium and ventricle close to stop blood flowing backwards. The ventricle contracts forcing the blood out through the pulmonary vein to the lungs. The blood in the lungs is then oxygenated and returned to the left side of the heart via pulmonary vein.

pulmonary artery
So doctor what needs fixing today?
pulmonary vein
The left side of the heart receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left atrium. As the cardiac muscles contracts the blood is moved into the left ventricle - all the heart valves close prevent backflow. The left ventricle then contracts forcing the blood out through the aorta the largest artery in the body and into the arteries around the body give it oxygen. The transfer of oxygenated blood from the arteries than filters through the capillaries of the body and back into the veins to begin the cycle again.

superior vena cava
aorta

pulmonary artery
so what do you need to fix?
We need to fix one of your valves on the left side of the heart. Your valve stops blood going the wrong way. When your valve doesn’t work properly it can affect your blood pressure. The contraction of the heart gives you the diastolic pressure and the resting of the heart give you the systolic pressure. When the valve isn’t working properly your blood pressure can be affected giving you fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath
Post-surgery your red blood cells will help carry the oxygen and nutrients around your body. Your white blood cells will help fight any infection and platelets will help in healing your wounds and all of this is carried in the plasma. Now lets get to sleep and get you back to being fighting fit.
Thanks Doc.... see you when I'm all fixed!
