Troy is someone who will throw away everything If he doesn't have what he wants
Troy is an unloyal person who always keeps his options open no matter what, "I latched on to her and told her- I'm gonna tell you the truth- I told her, " Baby, I don't wanna marry, I just wanna be your man" (Wilson 12). Troy subtly eludes to rose not being his forever since marriage intimidates him.
I told her, "Baby, I don't wanna marry, I just wanna be your man."
I told him if He wasn't the marrying kind, then move out the way so the marrying kind could find me.
Troy talks about how Jackie robinson was allowed to play baseball while he wasn't, "Jackie Robinson wasn't nobody. I'm talking about if you could play ball then they ought to have let you play. Don't care what color you were. Come telling me I come along too early"(Wilson 15). Troy explains how he could've done anything Jackie Robinson could've done if he was given the chance to do so.
Troy tells Bono and Rose they story of his metaphorical battle vs Death, "I wrestled death three days and three nights and I'm standing here to tell you about it" (Wilson 17). Troy often talks about his battles with death throughout the story as a metaphor for his fight against pneumonia.
