טקסט Storyboard

  • Lets take a look at what media portrays, how that affects body image, and how that affects eating disorders.
  • How Does the Media Influence Eating Disorders?
  • 69% of elementary girls in a survey said that pictures in magazines affect their body image and beauty standards.
  • The Facts:
  • The media tends to show this thin beauty standard for women; calling women who are thin and lean seemingly more beautiful than someone with a normal body type. With this standard and many other beauty standards pushed by media, there is a direct link between these standards, body dissatisfaction, and eating disorders, especially among women.
  • 49% of these girls said these pictures made them want to lose weight
  • According to the National Eating Disorder Association, media that portrays the ideal body type as muscular, for men, also influences their self-image.
  • Notice that they are pushing women to lose weight and making it seem like the weight is a problem. Not only that, but even pushing for a diet. Same for men, this cover is idolizing muscle and being "shredded".
  •
  •
  • These kinds of media that reinforce unrealistic beauty standards are what is causing the increase in people's dissatisfaction of their bodies. Meaning, these standards are negatively impacting people's mental health, self image, and directly contributing to the increase in eating disorders, especially among adolescents.
  • The Solution:
  • This way, we can focus on what we feel is beautiful and not be influenced by unreachable beauty standards.
  • - Choose media wisely- Limit the use of social media- Advocate and talk about body positivity
