  • Jose had gone through a series of peer mediation sessions to manage his aggressive tendencies. He learned healthy alternatives and options to solving issues and obstacles in life, rather than resorting to aggression.
  • SCENE FOUR
  • Implementing the alternatives and healthy options that he had learned in these sessions, Jose became involved in various programs, activities, and organizations in the community. included the exchange program in his school that gives him the opportunity to attend any state in the U.S. for a year.
  • SCENE FIVE
  • His junior year, the exchange program allowed him to travel to Texas. Upon arrival to his new school, he was treated differently because it was apparent he was from another place.
  • SCENE SIX
  • Let's fight these stereotypes and show the world what we can do!
  • When people asked or discovered where he was from, Guam, they were surprised at his fluency in English. They questioned him about Guam and if the island was providing schools, had modern technology, and stared at him in confusion when he said he is a U.S. citizen.
  • Wow! You're from Guam? Your English is so good! Do you also have textbooks in your school?
  • Realizing how strong and damaging those stereotypes were, he used this opportunity to promote Guam and what it has to offer such as the education, culture, and people.
  • After finishing his junior year in Texas, he came back to Guam and encouraged students to take part in the exchange program and any other opportunity to travel and promote the island to help disprove the misconceptions of people from Guam being illiterate and uncivilized.
