Liesle, her brother, and her mother are on a train to Germany to give Liesle and her brother up for adoption. Her brother starts coughing then dies.
Step 4: Meting the Mentor/Helper
They bury Liesle's brother in a snowy field beside the railway. One of the grave diggers drop a book. Liesle takes it, although she doesn't know how to read.
Step 5: Crossing the Threshhold
Liesle arrives on Himmel street. She meets Rosa and Hans, her new parents. Hans is very nice, Rosa is not
Step 6: Tests and enemies
Hans finds the book she stool. He helps her read. She makes cigarettes for him. They do all this while Rosa sleeps.
Liesle gets to play soccer with rudy. She has to be Goalie. She actually blocks rudy's shot. Liesle and Rudy begin to become friends.
When Liesle's classmates find out she can't read or wright, they make fun of her, especially Ludwig. Liesle finally has enough of Ludwig. She beats up Ludwig.
