- Jing Mei's mother tries to make Jing Mei into a prodigy and be famous, but Jing Mei doesn't want to. She hates all of the tests and training she is forced to do.

- Jing Mei is forced to start taking piano lessons with Old Chong, a very old man who is deaf and can't see well.

- Old Chong and Jing Mei's mom sign Jing Mei up for a church talent show. Jing Mei performs, and she plays her song horribly.
