  • Lincoln and the American Union
  • At this point, 7 Southern states had seceded from the Union, but the war has not yet started.
  • "To the extent of my ability, I shall take care, as the Constitution itself expressly enjoins upon me, that the laws of the Union be faithfully executed in all the States."
  • The Civil War began a month after this speech, as it showed to the Southeners that Lincoln would not support them.
  • How President Lincoln changed the course of the United States throughout his time in presidency.
  • Lincoln's First Inaugural Address - March 4th 1861Defending the Union (Part 1)
  • "All persons held as slaves within any state in rebellion against the US, shall be forever free...labor faithfully for reasonable wages."
  • Lincoln expresses how he will do whatever it takes to keep the Union together as is in his power as a President, and he will not allow the South to secede.

  • Emancipation Proclamation - January 1st, 1863Defending the Union (Part 2)
  • With a dwindling number of volunteers from the South, the Union''s army is getting smaller. Lincoln is forced to address the issues and rally the people.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation states that all slaves will be free and will be able to join the army. It also addresses the problem that the North is having with the number of soldiers in the army.
  • After this speech, the public response was very mixed. The Southerners heavily disagreed, while the Northerners felt the opposite. Many African-American slaves went to the army to join and fight for their future.
