- Welcome to 1782! This is Hector St. Jean de Crevecour. He is going to help us answer your question.
- Hello! I am an immigrant from France! I came here because of the surplus of opportunity! "Ubi panis ibi patria, is the motto of all emigrants," (Crevecour 49-56) .This translates to: Where there is bread, there is country.
- You see, all immigrants are brought together by the ability to thrive in this new country! That's what America is all about.
- Additionally, "Here the rewards of his industry follow with equal steps the progress of his labor," (Crevecour 49-56).
- This means you can achieve whatever you desire if you put in the work!

- We are here to listen to President George W. Bush give the 2002 State of the Union address. Maybe we can find an answer to your question.
- Where are we now?
- "We're in a fight for our principles, and our first responsibility is to live by them. No one should be singled out for unfair treatment or unkind words because of their ethnic background or religious faith, (Bush 2002).

- Being American means you have freedom! Freedom of religion, and more importantly freedom to express who you are!
- Oh I get it now! Being American means you can be whoever you want to be and be accepted! That's so cool!
- This is president Lyndon B. Johnson. He is about to speak on Voting Rights and the American Promise in 1965.
- Who is the old dude?
- "Open your polling places to all your people. Allow men and women to register and vote whatever the color of their skin., (Johnson Volume I, 107).
- Nope, we fought for the rights of every person to vote regardless of gender or race!
- Wait, so everybody hasn't always been able to vote?
- That's awesome!
- I hope you know a little more about what it means to be American now!
- I sure do! Now that I know America was built for people to accomplish whatever they put their mind to, and that every person here is of equal worth I am proud to be American!
