“The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn, the two table lamps alight-hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. On the sideboard behind her, two tall glasses, soda water, whiskey and Fresh ice cubes in the Thermos bucket.” This quote from the story explains the scenery of the exposition. On top of that Mary is planning on telling Patrick that she is pregnant but before she could speak Patrick tells Mary he is leaving her for another woman.

Mary was in such rage that as soon as Patrick turned around, Mary took the heavy piece of lamb and struck Patrick over the head with it and backed up watching him die as he fell upon the floor. Mary then creates her own crime scene to prevent being accused by the detectives who she calls to come help. And within minutes authorities arrive at the scene.
