About 3300 years ago, a boy of 9 was chosen to be Pharaoh of Egypt, Tutankhamun. In Thebes, in a spectacular palace, in the presence of priests and servants, there were also golden statues of the gods that separated themselves into his friends. He would then put on the Nemes crown and be escorted to the Temple of Amun where incense filled the air and the priests muttered invocations. Even at his age, the double crown felt incredibly heavy on his head, for he was to become the head of a mighty civilization. He would be seen as a god.

A DIFFICULT DECISION: Tutankhamun was standing there, silent before a tall obelisk with carvings glowing in the sun; one of his advisors, Ay, knelt by him."The people miss the old gods," Ay said in a whisper. "Aten has brought only anger and drought."The boy-king looked toward the Nile River-the lifeline of Egypt-and nodded. "Let the temples be restored," he said. "And we shall worship Ra, Osiris, Anubis, and all our gods again."The priests cheered. Festivals were back throughout the land; temples were being rebuilt, with statues of the gods rising once more.The truly grandson was no longer a boy. He had become Pharaoh-Restorer of Egypt's Traditions.
