Russian Leaders Joseph Stalin was a political revolutionary and ruled the Soviet Union from the 1920s until his death in 1953. While in power, Stalin transformed Russia from an agricultural peasant society to an industrial superpower. Stalin used violence and terror to achieve his goals, resulting in the deaths of over 20 million Russians.
